He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, the General Society of Mayflower Descendants and the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Michigan. One of the first people invited to join the Society, Colonel Shaw was a San Diego Genealogical Society charter member, joining in November 1946. His assignments included Band Master, Commandant of Fort Tuthill and United States Property and Disbursing Officer (USP&DO). He served in the Arizona National Guard during World War I (158th Infantry Brigade) and World War II.
